How to choose between porcelain veneers and crowns.

Whether porcelain crowns or veneers are used to enhance your smile, the truth of the matter is no one should notice that you have had any work done. Your friends and family should perceive only a subtle change, something they can’t quite put their finger on.

Although porcelain veneers and dental crowns share many similarities in what they are designed to do, there are actually some important differences.

In addition to treating large cavities, dental crowns are used to restore teeth that are broken or worn, hold together teeth that are weakened by large fillings or deep fractures and secure dental bridges in place. Crowns offer a huge aesthetic benefit, improving the appearance of the affected teeth with results that typically look very natural. Crowns also serve to provide incredible strength and support to the original tooth, protecting it from further damage and, in many cases, eventual tooth extraction.

The chief difference between porcelain veneers and dental crowns is the fact that veneers cover only the front, most visible portion of the tooth, whereas crowns cover the entire tooth. Porcelain veneers are an excellent solution for many esthetic imperfections such as poor color, shape or contours, fractured teeth, tooth position, as well as some minor bite related problems. They are also an excellent option for managing superficial stains in teeth not amenable to bleaching.

The important thing to remember is that both crowns and veneers are custom-designed for each patient’s individual needs. That is one of the many reasons why these procedures are so effective – they are specifically designed for your teeth so the fit is precise and the results look very natural. Plus, veneers and crowns are color-tinted to match surrounding teeth and attached with a durable cement to ensure results can last for decades with appropriate care.
